Azzaden Valley Trek (3).jpg

This two day moderate trek starts in Imlil from Dar Assarou (1,761m) and ends at Kasbah Africa (1,041m) near the end of the beautiful Azzaden Valley. We walk for approx 5 to 6 hours on the first day and 4 to 5 hours on the second day as we cross the Tizi n'Mzik pass (2,489m) then walk 17 km, almost the entire length of the Azzaden Valley, down to Kasbah Africa. The scenery en route is diverse. We trek through Toubkal National Park and will see 11 contrasting Berber villages, spending a night in Tizi Oussem, in the heart of the National Park.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Trek from Imlil to Tizi Oussem via Tizi n'Mzik pass

From Dar Assarou (1,761m) we cross the Imlil Valley and head up to the main trail that leads from Imlil to Kasbah du Toubkal (1,796m). From here we walk up to the Aremd road then follow a trail through the Toubkal National Park that leads to the Tizi n'Mzik pass (2,489m). There's time for photos en route as we slowly trek up to the pass. At the pass there is a stone shelter with refreshments on sale (seasonal). After time to marvel at the views we begin our descent through Toubkal National Park to Tizi Oussem village (1,822m) and the top of the Azzaden Valley. We'll enjoy a picnic lunch break on our way down. The rest of the day is free to explore the village and its surrounds. Your accommodation tonight is in a gite. Facilities are simple but you can expect a hot shower. Pillows and blankets are provided and you will sleep on mattresses in a private room. Toilet and showers are communal.

Overnight gite in Tizi Oussem with picnic lunch and dinner.

Day 2 - Trek to Kasbah Africa down the Azzaden Valley

After breakfast we start our 16 km walk along the Azzaden Valley. Our trail winds up and down both sides of the valley, following the Azzaden river on its journey towards the Atlantic. Nourished by High Atlas springs throughout the year, the valley has many orchards:  we’ll see walnut and almond trees, olive groves and plentiful fruit trees including cherry, apple, peach, plum, apricots, quince, lemon and fig. During our walk we enjoy a picnic lunch close to the river. We’ll also learn about day to day village life from our Berber guide. Our trek ends at Kasbah Africa, a beautiful nature retreat built on the bend of the river. This afternoon take your time to experience the Kasbah’s breathtaking natural setting. Enjoy some bird spotting (over 150 species of birds are native to the area) and search for the usually shy “Sanglier” – wild black pig – in the Takerkhort Wildlife Reserve. In Spring, Autumn and Summer months there’s always time for a swim and a laze in a hammock. In Winter, get cosy by the log fire in the comfort of the lounge bar.

Trek ends at Kasbah Africa; breakfast and picnic lunch are included.
